Mavericks, Rangers Split Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a Friday (Apr. 15) doubleheader with the Regis Rangers at Bergman Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play.

In the first game of the day, the Mavericks used back-to-back big innings in a 13-5 win over the Rangers. Colorado Mesa tallied five runs in the third and six runs in the fourth while adding single runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Caleb Farmer provided plenty of offense in the win. The senior went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four runs driven in with a double and his 19th home run of the season. In the bottom of the third, he took a 2-0 pitch and sent it out to right center that plated Haydn McGeary and Harrison Rodgers.

On batter later, Spencer Bramwell lifted his 10th home run of the season that was guesstimated to travel 455 ft over the left center field wall.

Matthew Turner and Johnny Carr each finished with two hits.

Blake Rohm earned the start and pitched well. Rohm (5-1) allowed one run on two hits, walked four and struck out five in five innings of work. He retired seven in a row and eight of the final nine batters he faced.

Three relievers combined to pitch the final two innings.

In the nightcap, the Rangers scored in six of the seven innings and the Mavericks could never mount the comeback in an 18-11 loss.

Trailing 9-1, the Mavericks scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut into the Ranger lead and make it 9-6. The inning was highlighted by a Chase Hamilton three-run home run.

That was all the closest the Mavericks got in the game.

Hamilton finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and four runs driven in while Stevenson Reynolds went 3-for-3 with two runs driven in.

Spencer Bramwell and Conrad Villafuerte each had two hits.

Cooper Vasquez took the loss on the mound and falls to 3-2 on the season.

Despite the doubleheader split, the Mavericks remain in first-place in the RMAC standings at 26-9 overall and 13-6 in the conference.

The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 12pm.
