PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team completed the first day of their final regular season tournament of the season on Monday (Apr. 11) afternoon. The Mavericks are competing in the Southern Colorado Masters at Walking Stick Golf Course on the campus of CSU Pueblo.
 
The Mavericks turned in their best first day, two round score during this season, consisting of both fall and spring seasons, as they turned in a 6-over, 582. They had an even-par, 288 in their first round of the day and have built a two-stroke lead on third place Western New Mexico.
 
Tournament host CSU Pueblo is running away with the team title as they are 20-under, 556 for the tournament.
 
Redshirt freshman Dakota Gillman is enjoying one of the best tournaments of his career. He is sitting in a tie for fourth place at 2-under, 142. In the first round of the day, Gillman shot a 3-under, 69 as he carded five birdies against two bogeys. He had an opportunity at a 68 but bogeyed his final hole of the round.
 
Conditions got worse as the day went on but the Fort Mohave, Ariz. product stayed steady as he had two birdies, three bogeys and 13 pars in round two for a 1-over, 73.
 
Yael Chahin finished in a tie for 14^th place on the individual leaderboard after he fired a pair of 1-over, 73s. Chahin had six birdies and eight bogeys in his two rounds.
 
True freshman Timmy Cavarno did something on the day that hasn't happened in the men's program in a while. Cavarno had an eagle in each of his two rounds today to keep him in the top-20 on the leaderboard. In his first round, he eagled the par-5, No. 15 and in his afternoon round, he eagled the par-5, No. 5 hole to tie for 18^th on the day.
 
CSU Pueblo's Andrew Ni leads the field by two strokes at 7-under, 137.
 
The Mavericks will complete the tournament tomorrow beginning at 8:30am.
