GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team claimed its fourth win in nine days as they completed the home-and-home sweep over Colorado College by cruising to a 7-0 Senior Day victory over the visiting Tigers in overcast and blustery conditions on Sunday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
The Mavericks had defeated the Tigers, 8-1, last Saturday (Apr. 2) in Colorado Springs and won four of their final five matches of the regular season while going 2-1 in their only homestand of the entire season over the weekend.
Now 11-13 overall, the Mavericks dropped just one set to the 6-10 Tigers after
Maike Waldburger and
Lauren Thomas were recognized for their 4-year contributions to the CMU program in pre-dual Senior Day festivities.
Waldburger then went out to post a 6-4 No. 2 doubles win with
Halle Romero to clinch the doubles point before crushing Elizabeth Girian, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 as part of the CMU singles sweep. Thomas also went 2-0 on the day in exhibition matches pairing with
Kenna Kelley for a 6-2 doubles win before scoring an 8-1 singles win over CC's Elise Chassman.
The Maverick underclassmen were also quite strong as freshmen
Makenna Livingston and
Macy Richards scored a 6-2 No. 1 doubles win over Olivia Dicks and Maddy Meister to get the Mavs off to a great start. Sophomore
Julianna Campos and
Paige Furin then made it a 3-for-3 weekend at No. 3 doubles as they knocked off Girian and Christina Heffron, 6-4.
The Maverick youngsters continued to roll in singles as Livingston defeated Heffron, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles while Richards was a 6-1, 6-1 win over Malia Rivera in the No. 4 flight as the Mavs clinched the dual with a 4-0 lead.
Romero also came back after dropping the first set 6-0 to defeat Gigi Jensen at No. 3 singles, 0-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Campos then scored an easy 6-1, 6-1 victory over Grace Dereemer at No. 5 singles to extend her winning streak to seven matches. Furin was also a comfortable 6-1, 6-0 victory over Dicks in the No. 6 singles match.
The Mavericks will now await their post-season fate with the selections and seeds for the 12-team Pacific West Conference Championship Tournament expected around 1 p.m. MDT on Monday. The Mavs came into the weekend ranked 12
th.
