GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 2 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the series sweep of the Adams State Grizzlies on Sunday (Mar. 6) afternoon after a 20-8 win in game four at Bergman Field during the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's opening weekend.
Despite the series sweep, Adams State (2-12, 0-4 RMAC) hung around in every game of the series and Sunday wasn't any different. Adams State led 8-6 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning where the Mavericks (13-3, 4-0 RMAC) exploded for six runs in the inning and followed it up with eight runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
During the seventh inning,
Haydn McGeary hit the second of two home runs for him on the day to get the scoring started in the inning.
Robert Sharrar followed him up with a RBI single that was followed by a Grizzly error which allowed a run to score.
Johnny Carr had a RBI groundout and the scoring closed with a
Matthew Turner RBI single to center field.
The eight run eighth inning featured four big swings to score the runs. Sharrar belted a grand slam while Turner followed with a sacrifice fly.
Caleb Farmer delivered a RBI double and Stevnson Reynolds hit a two-run shot to left to close out the scoring on the day.
Chase Hamilton finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored while
Matthew Turner was 3-for-4 with five runs driven in.
Haydn McGeary was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two runs driven in and two home runs while teammate
Spencer Bramwell was 3-for-5 with four runs scored and a home run.
Josh Danyliw got the start in the finale and allowed five runs on six hits, walked two and struck out four but didn't factor into the decision.
Isaac Hayen earned the win in relief after allowing just one hit, a walk and two strikeouts in three and a third innings of work.
Colorado Mesa will be on the road for a big four-game series with upstart Colorado School of Mines over in Golden. First pitch of the series is scheduled for Friday at 4pm.
