GOLDEN, Colo. – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa baseball team played in their first road games since the season opening series against Azusa Pacific. The Mavericks opened the series on Sunday in a doubleheader with the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Sunday (Mar. 13) at Darden Field.
In the series opener, the Orediggers went ahead 4-2 after five innings but the Mavericks scored 10 runs in the final four innings to take the 12-6 win in the first game.
The Mavericks hit three home runs in the game including one off the bat of
Julian Boyd who came into the game in the top of the seventh inning. Boyd finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored and four runs driven in.
Spencer Bramwell and
Chase Hamilton hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the ninth inning to cap the scoring for the Mavericks.
Six players finished with multiple hits led by the three hits of
Jordan Stubbings and Hamilton.
Dave Henderson earned the win in relief as he fired the final three innings of the game. Henderson (1-1) allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out two to close out the game.
Blake Rohm earned the start but did not factor into the decision. Rohm allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and struck out 10.
In the nightcap, the Mavericks built a 4-0 lead after the third inning but couldn't score anymore while the Orediggers scored six unanswered in a 6-4 win for Mines.
Colorado Mesa scored the game's opening run on a RBI single by
Haydn McGeary on a ground ball through the left side of the infield. The next batter up was
Jordan Stubbings and he deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a three-run homer to make it 4-0.
Mines responded with a home run in the bottom half of the third then added a single run in the fifth to make it 4-2.
The Orediggers tallied four runs in the sixth on two two-run home runs in the inning to take the decisive lead.

The two teams will complete the series with a doubleheader tomorrow at 12pm.
