GOLDEN, Colo. – Sophomore left-handed pitcher Kannon was downright unhittable in Colorado Mesa's 4-0 win over Colorado School of Mines in the back half of today's (Mar. 14) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader.
Handy got the start in the series finale and fired a seven-inning no-hitter to become the eighth pitcher to throw a no-hitter in program history and the first since Luke Cheever no-hit Colorado School of Mines on April 8, 2006.
The Herriman, Utah native retired the first 20 batters he faced in order before surrendering a walk. Despite the work on the mound, Handy needed some help from his defense with one play really standing out. Facing the first batter in the top of the fourth inning, I'Ly Hsue fisted a ball to third base but
Caleb Farmer made the slow roller play to retire the speedy Hsue.
Handy struck out six and improved to 3-1 on the season in his career outing.
Spencer Bramwell provided the offense for the Mavericks in the second inning as he belted a 1-2 pitch over the wall in left field for a two-run home run giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
Farmer hit his 12
th home run of the season in the top half of the third inning to give the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage.
Colorado Mesa would tack on one more in the fourth inning on a
Robert Sharrar single that had a fielding error with it.
In the opening game of the day, the Mavericks held three different leads in the game, but the Mines run in the seventh inning proved to be the difference in a 6-5 loss in game three of the series.
Matthew Turner went 3-for-4 in the game to pace the offense.
Caleb Farmer,
Jordan Stubbings, and
Conrad Villafuerte each had two hits in the game as well.
Junior righty
Gage Edwards took the tough luck loss. He allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out three in three innings of work.
The Mavericks will be back home in Grand Junction for a four-game series with UCCS with first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm on Friday.
