Tucson, Ariz. – Opening their weekend at the Cactus Classic, the Colorado Mesa (2-4) beach volleyball team held their own against Division I opponents, Arizona State and Hawaii in day one of play.
Not to be overlooked, the Mavericks opened the day against the Sundevils of Arizona State, three of the five flights taking the first sets. In back and forth battles the Sundevils would prevail at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions, the pair of
Holly Schmidt and
Macie Lachemann winning at the twos spot to push their record to 5-0 to start the season.
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer at the No. 1 spot, battled to a decisive set, a similar situation at the No. 4 with
Ara Norwood and
Sierra Hunt just narrowly dropping their match in three sets, all of which were decided by deuce.
In their second dual of the day against the Beach Bows of Hawaii, claimed all five courts for the shutout. Lachemann and Schmidt dropped their first game of the season, but not without a fight at 21-17, 21-19 set scores.
Tye Wedhorn and
Sabrina VanDeList played in the No. 5 spot throughout the day, battling in against their opponents to aid in the team score.
The Mavericks will close out their trip tomorrow taking on Santa Clara and the Univ. of Arizona at 9 a.m. and noon, respectively.
