Northridge, Calif. – Extending their win streak to six, the Colorado Mesa beach volleyball program picked up their first win over the California State – Northridge Matadors Wednesday (March 23) at the CSUN Beach Volleyball Facility. They ultimately split the doubleheader on a sunny first day in California.
The
Mavericks (9-6) sought out their first win over CSUN in program history, doing just that in the opening match by 4-1 decision. Flights 2-5 defeated their respective pairs in straight sets, the Matadors taking the top-flight for their only point.
Ara Norwood and
Sierra Hunt claimed the first point at the fours.
Holly Schmidt and
Macie Lachemann broke the single-season win record with their 10
th of the season at the twos, fending off Seyvion Waggoner and Mikaela Maughan 21-14, 22-20.
The dual clinching point came from the No.5 pair of
Tye Wedhorn and
Sabrina VanDeList, taking their match 21-18, 21-11.
Jada Hall and
Jessa Megenhardt tacked on an insurance point at the threes, the seventh with for the duo.
Immediately following the first, the pairs took to the courts for the second match of the day.
The sun beating down in the early afternoon, the Mavs found themselves dropping the first two points, turning the pressure to the No. 1, 3, 5 flights.
The response from
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer at the top-flight was dominant as they came away with the Mavs first point behind a 21-13, 21-6 victory.
VanDeList and Wedhorn then held off a late rally at the fives, claiming a three-set victory for the tying point.
It came down to the No. 3 court, the Mavs coming up just short in a 17-15 decision in the third.
Colorado Mesa will take a couple days off to prepare for a couple of Division II contests against Concordia Irvine and Cal State LA, Saturday (March 26) at Great Park in Irvine.
