TROPHY CLUB, Texas – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team was able to complete their first round and half of their second round before play was halted for the day at the Lion Invitational at The Trophy Club's Whitworth Course on Monday (Mar. 21) afternoon.
The Mavericks finished their first round in a tie for 10
th place on the team leaderboard with their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival UCCS as both shot 307 in the first round. They were five strokes behind ninth place West Texas A&M and seven strokes behind eighth place Central Missouri.
Western New Mexico led the 18 team field after firing a 291 in the first round.
Kyle Pearson and
Cole Beyer each shot a 2-over, 74 in their first rounds of the tournament. Pearson opened his round with bogeys in three of his first seven holes but came back in a strong way, carding three birdies in his next six holes of the round. He bogeyed two more holes to close out the round including one on his final hole.
Beyer, a freshman from Woodburn, Ore., had two birdies in his round against four bogeys. After opening the round with four straight pars, he birdied his fifth hole and ended up making the turn at even par. Beyer and Pearson closed the round in a tie for 18
th place on the individual leaderboard.
Midwestern State All-American Jake Doggett led the tournament after one round with a 4-under, 68.
Teams will complete their second round to open the day tomorrow and roll right into the third and final round following that. Play is set to commence at 8am CT.
