AZUSA, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to the nation's 19
th-ranked Azusa Pacific University Cougars on Saturday afternoon here at APU's Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex.
The Cougars, who had three regionally-ranked and one nationally-ranked players in their singles lineup, improved to 9-6 with the win while the Mavericks fell to 6-9.
APU swept the three doubles matches and then won all six of the singles affairs, although two of those went to third-set match tie-breakers.
Maverick freshmen
Makenna Livingston and
Macy Richards each won the second sets of their respective No. 2 and 5 singles matches. Livingston, who was ranked 14
th in the NCAA Division II West Region, was playing April Wong, ranked 18
th in the region after the fall season. Wong won the match tie-breaker, 10-4 after the two had split 6-4 decisions in the opening two sets.
Richards fell to Katherine Nguyen in the first set tie-breaker, 7-2, but then came back for a 7-5 win in the second set. Nguyen then won the match tie-breaker, 10-7.
APU's Eleonora Liga, ranked first in the region and third nationally, won her No. 1 singles match over
Issy Coman, 6-1, 6-1.
The Mavericks will now head to Fresno to play three more matches in as many days. They face Holy Names in a neutral-site encounter on Sunday before facing host Fresno Pacific University on Monday. They will then wrap up the trip on Tuesday against Dominican University of California in another neutral-site match-up.
