FRESNO, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team claimed their third victory in four matches over eight days, dominating a short-handed Holy Names University outfit on Sunday evening here at Fresno Pacific University's Haak Tennis Complex.
The Mavericks improved to 7-9 overall took advantage of three default wins and another retirement as they won every completed match en-route to a 7-0 win over the Hawks, who could only field a lineup of four players
Halle Romero and
Issy Coman won their No. 2 doubles match, 6-1 after
Maike Waldburger and
Paige Furin had won by default at No. 3. The other doubles match was left unfinished as the Mavs took a 3-0 overall lead into the played singles matches after receiving the free points in the fifth and sixth flights.
The Mavs then clinched the dual at No. 2 singles as Makena Livingston claimed victory when her opponent Lada Baglaeva retired due to illness. Livingston was leading the match 6-2, 2-0.
Meanwhile, the Mavericks won the other three singles matches in straight sets as well.
Coman defeated Ana Rio, 6-3, 6-2 in the top flight while Waldburger was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Lucy Rekasch at No. 3. Romero defeated Lavender, 6-2, 7-5 in the closest match of the evening at No 4.
The Mavericks continue a 3-match, 3-day stay in Fresno on Monday playing the host Sunbirds (7-6), ranked 46
th in the nation.
