IRVINE, Calif.— After an exchange of 4-run second innings, Sonoma State University posted single tallies in the third and fourth while going to claim a 6-4 win over the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks in both teams' final games of the Concordia Kickoff Classic softball tournament here at Great Park.
The Seawolves improved to 3-2 on the season as relief pitcher Jesse Dupuis retired 16 of the 17 Mavericks she faced in 5 1/3 innings worth of work.
The Mavericks were held to just three hits overall but scored all of their runs in the top of the second as
Ally Distler walked before moving to second on an
Ashley Bradford single and third on a ground out. After a walk loaded the bases,
Ava Fugate delivered a base-clearing triple that put the Mavs up 3-0. She then scored on a
Mallory Warner sacrifice fly as the Mavs took a 4-0 lead prompting the move to Dupuis.
SSU then roared back as Skylar Linnane hit a 2-run home run before a double, hit by pitch and pair of singles tied the score.
The Seawolves then took advantage of three more free passes in the third as Cassidy Romano delivered the go-ahead RBI single.
A Giana Hays RBI triple then completed the scoring in the fourth.
The Mavs (1-4) used all three of their pitchers.
Shea Mauser (0-1) took the loss as the middle of those three after giving up three earned runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Bradford was named to the All-Tournament team on Sunday evening after hitting a team-best .385 throughout the weekend.
The Mavericks are off next weekend before resuming their season at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona, slated for Feb. 18-20.
