Kingsville, Texas – Taking some of the colder Colorado temperatures with them to the Lone Star state, the Colorado Mesa Beach Volleyball team battled it out against tough opponents on day one of the Texas A&M Kingsville Invitational.
Decided by one flight in each of their contests, the Mavericks fell by 3-2 decision in their first match against Stephen F. Austin. In a tightly contested Division II matchup with the hosts, the Mavs went the distance in three of the five flights, falling by a 3-2 decision to the Javelinas in the night cap.
At the No. 2 flight the pair of
Holly Schmidt and
Macie Lachemann finished 2-0 on the day. Against the Lady Jacks the pair came back to win sets two and three, dominating the deciding set by a 15-4 score. In game two they gave the team their second point of the dual winning in straight sets (23-21, 21-14) over Lexi Ahrens and Roxanne Morris.
At the No. 1 position,
Hahni Johnson and
Savannah Spitzer split on the day taking down Stephen F. Austin, 21-17, 21-15. Against TAMUK they would take the opening set 21-14, narrowly dropping the third 15-13.
Jessa Megenhardt and
Jada Hall teamed up in the No. 3 spot also going 1-1 on the day. After falling earlier in the afternoon, they bounced back with a straight set win (23-21, 21-14) over TAMUK's Adrienne van Brunt and Madelyn Wallace, putting the Mavs first point on the board.
Ara Norwood and
Sierra Hunt battled throughout the day at the fours spot, also forcing a third set against the Javelinas. Similarly, at the No. 5
Ashton Reese and
Savannah Ott would refuse to go down without a fight, taking set two in game two of the day to push the extra set.
Tye Wedhorn and Sabrina Vandelist made their presence known in the sixth spot, splitting sets with Stephen F. Austin before dominating their matchup with Texas A&M Kingsville, 21-13, 21-9.
Bright and early, Colorado Mesa will look for their first win of the season over Missouri Baptist, looking to build on the weekend against Univ. of Mary Hardin Baylor later in the morning.
