Mavericks Open Spring Season in California

PLEASANTON, Calif. - The Colorado Mesa men's golf team opened their spring campaign on Monday (Feb. 21) as they are competing in the Bay Area Invitational hosted by Cal State East Bay at The Club at Ruby Hills. 

The Mavericks are in 11th place at the first two rounds of play that finished on late Monday evening. They are just five strokes outside of jumping into the top ten with Dominican and Stanislaus State the two teams in front of them. 

Cal State San Marcos is the team leader by 14 strokes over Western Washington. The Cougars were 5-under through their two rounds. 

True freshman Chris Tarmet leads the Mavericks with a 5-over, 149 after two rounds and is 25th on the individual leaderboard. Tarmet shot an even-par, 72 in his first round of the day and followed it up with a 5-over, 77 in his afternoon round. He had four scores better than par in his first round including a run of three birdies in four holes on his back nine. 

Senior Kyle Pearson had the team's best round in the afternoon with a 2-over, 74. Pearson was 1-under in his first nine holes in the afternoon. 

Pablo Diaz shot a two-round total of 152 (75-77) to finish the day as the Mavericks number two golfer.  

Cal State San Marcos' Matt Pennington is the individual leader at 10-under, 134 after shooting matching 67s on day one.  

The Mavericks will complete their third and final round tomorrow morning.
