Maverick women split 6-1 decisions on first day of spring campaign

CMU wins three 3-set singles matches over WNMU

GLENDALE, Ariz.— Macy Richards, Julianna Campos and Kenna Kelley all claimed three-set singles wins to help lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick women's tennis team to a 6-1 win over Western New Mexico University on Friday afternoon after the Mavericks had dropped a decision by the same score to Ottawa University of Arizona earlier on the day here at the Paseo Racquet Center.

The Mavericks, playing for the first time this spring, also received a pair of wins from Maike Waldburger and Paige Furin in the night cap against the Mustangs to move to 2-3 on the overall 2021-22 season.

Audrey O'Rear and Lauren Thomas were also victorious in doubles action for CMU against WNMU after Richards and Furin had teamed for a doubles win against OUAZ.  Kelley was the only singles winner for the Mavericks against the NAIA's Spirit.

The Spirit (2-0) claimed victories at No. 1 and 3 doubles to take the early lead despite, Richards and Furin at No. 2.

The Spirit then clinched the dual with straight-set singles wins at No. 1, 4 and 5.

The Mavs would go on to take the other three singles matches to split-set tiebreakers as Kelley claimed a 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (11-9) thriller over Veronica Gallardo at No. 6 singles to give the Mavs their lone point.

CMU would go on to bounce back in a big way against the Mustangs (2-1), beaten for the first time this season.  Waldburger and Furin teamed for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Massiel Paredes and Julia Terrazas while O'Rear and Thomas saw their lone action of the day, claiming a 6-4 win over Caini Wang and Nicold Gonzalez at No. 3 doubles.

Waldburger then defeated Andree Arnautu, 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 singles match while Richards and Campos controlled the third sets of their No. 3 and 4 singles matches, that clinched the dual.

Kelley also won her No. 5 singles match in three sets while Furin dominated Gonzalez, 6-1, 6-2 in the sixth flight.

The Mavericks will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday morning encounter against Arizona Christian University in Phoenix.  The Firestorm (1-1), fell 6-1 to WNMU on Thursday afternoon.
