GUNNISON, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's indoor track and field team claimed four event wins and the same number of NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying marks while a newcomer set a school-record on Saturday at the Mountaineer Open and Multi hosted by Western Colorado University in the Mountaineer Field House.
The efforts came after the Mavs set three NCAA marks during the pentathlon, which
Mica Jenrette won on Friday.
Two of the Mavs' marks provisional qualifying marks came in the 400 meters as
McKenna Molder claimed victory in 56.82 seconds to move up a spot to second in CMU history. Redshirt freshman teammate
Jordan Burnett took second in 57.24 seconds to rank fourth in Maverick lore and then came back to win the 200 meters in 25.29 seconds, moving into seventh place on the Mavs' all-time performers' charts for that discipline.
With the track-size and altitude conversions, Molder will rank as high as sixth nationally in the 400 pending other late weekend results at 56.29 while Burnett will rank as high as ninth at 56.70 seconds.
The Mavs also shined in the jumps as
Kiana Jackson and
Taeryn Trumper won events while
Josie Coffey and Jackson both set provisional qualifying marks. Jackson won the triple jump with a mark of 11.94 meters (39-2.25) to rank as high as fourth nationally while Trumper claimed the long jump with a leap of 5.45 meters (17-10.75) to rank ninth in CMU history.
Coffey got her season off to a good start as well, clearing a NCAA provisional qualifying height of 1.70 meters (5-7) to place second and sit tied for third on the current national list.
In the throwing area, newcomer
Virginia Tomon, a transfer from CSU Pueblo, broke a 5-year old school-record in the shot put with a throw of 12.63 meters (41-5.25) to place second. Her mark bettered Hannah McClure's Maverick standard of 12.60 meters (41-4.25), which had been set at the 2017 RMAC Championships, by an inch.
