Layman leads three first team, seven total All-RMAC honorees

VanDeList, Hunt also named to top all-conference unit

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Led by three first team selections, including repeat Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year Kerstin Layman, the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team had seven players named to the All-RMAC teams, which were announced Thursday by conference officials after a vote of the league's head coaches.
 
Layman, now a 4-time overall all-conference honoree, was joined by now 3-time First Team All-RMAC setter Sabrina VanDeList and redshirt sophomore outside hitter Sierra Hunt.
 
Meanwhile, outside hitter Sydney Leffler and middle blockers Savannah Spitzer and Tye Wedhorn all earned second team plaudits.  Right side Erin Curl was an honorable mention selection.
 
Layman, who also earned RMAC Defensive Player of the Year honors last fall, is the fist Maverick since 1993 and 1994 overall RMAC Player of the Year Amy Miller to earn a major conference award for two consecutive seasons.  Layman ranks second in the RMAC for digs per set (5.14) this season, her best average of her illustrious career and makes the First Team All-RMAC squad after picking up second team honors in both the spring and fall of 2021 after picking up an honorable mention nod as a sophomore in 2019.
 
The Littleton, Colorado native enters this week's RMAC Tournament with 1,545 career digs, fifth most in CMU history.  She has been named as the RMAC Defensive Player of the Week twice this season and five times in her career and has made just 11 reception errors this season.  Layman has had seven 20-plus dig efforts this season and has helped the Mavericks hold their opponents to a combined .155 hitting percentage.
 
VanDeList, a native of Severance, Colorado, leads the RMAC in service aces with 49 and ranks second in the RMAC for total assists (977) and assists per set (11.36), an average that ranks her fifth in the country.  Named as the RMAC Freshman of the Year in 2020-21, VanDeList has been named as the RMAC Setter of the Week nine times in her career, including three this season.
 
Also a First Team All-RMAC pick in both the spring and fall of 2021, she has recorded a team-high seven double-doubles this year and has had four 50-plus assist efforts.  She already ranks third in CMU history during the rally scoring era (2001-Present) for career aces and could become just the eighth?? Setter in CMU's all-time history to reach 2,500 career assists as soon as Thursday afternoon.  She has 2,461 career assists entering the RMAC Tournament.
 
Hunt has taken advantage of VanDeList's setting abilities, recording 298 kills this season en-route to her second overall all-conference plaudit.   The Aurora, Colorado product ranks third in the RMAC for kills per set (3.55) and ranks fourth for total points per set (3.93).  An honorable mention all-conference honoree as a true freshman in the spring of 2021, Hunt has been in double-figures for kills 17 times this season, including in each of her last seven matches.  She is also hitting a strong .268 from her outside hitter position and has recorded 38 total blocks, including 18 solos.
 
Leffler, a native of Eaton, Colorado, is second on the Maverick squad and ninth in the RMAC for kills per set (3.12).  She was a First Team All-RMAC pick last year and was named as the RMAC Freshman of the Year last season.  She also earned a second career RMAC Offensive Player of the Week honor this season on Oct. 18 and has been in double figures for kills 14 times this season, including when she matched a career-high with 22 kills against CSU Pueblo.
 
Wedhorn, a Glenwood Springs, Colorado product, has now been named to the Second Team All-RMAC unit three times in her collegiate career and in back-to-back seasons.  The redshirt senior ranks third in the RMAC for hitting percentage (.348) and tenth for blocks per set (0.87).  She has a team-high 75 blocks and is fourth on the squad with 194 kills.  She has hit above .600 in five matches and at or above .500 in five others.  Wedhorn has 723 career kills and 304 career blocks in her time in the RMAC, including her freshman and sophomore seasons at Fort Lewis.
 
Spitzer, a native of Aurora, Colorado, has now received three straight all-RMAC honors, picking up first team plaudits in the spring of 2021 before earning back-to-back second team honors.  She ranks second in the RMAC for hitting percentage at .396 and has tallied 190 kills and 46 blocks this season.   She has hit .600 or higher in seven matches this year and her season-long hitting percentage is on back to be the second best in school history, only behind RMAC record holder Kasie Gilfert.
 
Curl, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, is in her first year as a Maverick as a graduate transfer from LMU.  She is third on the CMU squad with 220 kills and 255 total points and is second behind Wedhorn with 52 blocks.  She is hitting .246 and has been in double-figures for kills 11 times this season.  She was named as the MVP of the Oredigger Classic at the beginning of the season and has had three double-doubles this year.
