Efficient Mavs win tenth straight

No. 19 CMU sets up Senior Day showdown with No. 21 Mines

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Outside hitter Sierra Hunt and middle blocker Tye Wedhorn combined for 21 kills without committing a single hitting error as the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team extended its winning streak to ten with a dominating effort over the visiting Chadron State College Eagles on Friday night in Brownson Arena.

The nation's 19th-ranked Mavericks out-hit the struggling Eagles by more than 300 points as a team (.363-.040) and improved to 18-4 overall and to 13-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.  In the process, they set up a Saturday afternoon Senior Day showdown with No. 21 Colorado School of Mines, also 13-2 in the RMAC at 4 p.m.  The Orediggers, 18-5 overall, were 3-set winners at Westminster on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Eagles lost their ninth straight match and fell to 7-17 overall and to 5-10 in the conference.

The Mavericks have now defeated the Eagles 28 straight times since 1995.

Hunt finished the night with a match-high 11 kills on 24 error-free attempts, hitting .458.  Wedhorn added 10 kills and hit .588 while also racking up three blocks.

Maverick graduate student right side Erin Curl was also in double-figures with ten kills and hit .318.

Defensively, CMU redshirt freshman libero Kerstin Layman recorded 22 digs and is now just six shy of 1,500 for her career.

Setter Sabrina VanDeList finished with 36 assists, eight digs and four service aces to extend her RMAC lead.

The Mavericks got better throughout the night, shaking off a spunky Eagle squad that hung around in the early going while taking a 13-12 lead on an ace from setter Devyn Volz.

However, the Mavs scored the next five points as Wedhorn teamed with Hunt and Curl on back-to-back blocks to trigger the run.

Taking a 17-13 lead after a Wedhorn kill, the Mavericks then cruised to the set win benefitting from nine Eagle attacking errors in the opening set.

The Mavs dominated the rest of the way as VanDeList tallied three aces in a 4-0 run to start the second set.  The Mavs then continued to dominate and led 11-2, 17-6 before scoring eight of the final nine points of the set, including a pair of Hunt kills and two set-ending aces from Jordan Woods.

The Mavs hit .321 in the second frame and were even better in the third, putting down 20 kills while committing just one hitting error, good for a .487 final set attack percentage.  Wedhorn and Sydney Leffler both finished that set with five kills while Curl and Hunt had four.

The Mavs played 13 players in the set, taking a 6-3 lead on a 4-0 run that featured kills by Wedhorn and Leffler while never looking back.

The Eagles did manage to pull within a point at 9-8 on an Alexia Hurtado kill but got no closer as the Mavs went on another 4-0 run before pulling away for the victory.

Hurtado had eight of the Eagles' 24 total kills.  The Mavs combined for 44 as a team and registered eight service aces, including a match-ending one from Maddi Foutz, one of the Mavs' late-match substitutes.
