MANHEIM, Pa. – The National Wrestling Coaches Association released their preseason national rankings on Thursday (Oct. 20) evening. Eight Mavericks received high praise from the ranking committee which led to a high preseason team ranking for the Colorado Mesa.
With the eight nationally ranked wrestlers, Colorado Mesa was ranked No. 3 in the preseason poll. The Mavericks finished the 2022 season with a perfect 5-0 record in duals and achieved a fifth-place finish at the NCWWC National Championships in Adrian, Mich.
North Central was the No. 1 preseason selection after having 13 wrestlers ranked in the top eight of each weight class. King was selected second with 11 ranked wrestlers, McKendree was fourth with seven ranked wrestlers and Augsburg was fifth with six ranked wrestlers to round out the top five.
Redshirt junior
Marissa Gallegos is the preseason No. 1 selection at 123 pounds after an impressive redshirt sophomore season. The Denver native went 25-2 en route to a third-place finish at last season's national championships. Gallegos won the Grand View Open and was named the most outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
Sophomore
Jayleen Sekona earned the nod as the preseason No. 1 ranked wrestler at 191 pounds. The Anchorage, Alaska native finished the season 22-10 and had an impressive run through the NCWWC Championship to finish in third place after defeating four ranked wrestlers in the tournament.
Teammate
Isabeau Shalack was the preseason No. 4 selection at 191 pounds. Shalack redshirted last season after an injury late in the previous season. Shalack is currently ranked in the top-8 in the world in beach wrestling at 70kg+ and enters the season with a 13-7 career record.
Redshirt sophomore
Dalia Garibay was ranked No. 2 at 155 pounds. Garibay redshirted last season after an injury halted her championship run during the 2020 season. She finished second at 136 pounds as a freshman and enters the year with a 26-9 career record.
Marlynne Deede, sister of Colorado Mesa women's basketball player Lauryn, was the preseason top selection at 155 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore
Jennesis Martinez comes into the season ranked No. 3 at 101 pounds after injuries forced her into a redshirt a season ago. Martinez enters the year with a 29-14 record in her career and a pair of all-American honors.
Teammate
Kaylie Catalano comes into the season ranked No. 7 at 101 pounds. Catalano qualified for the national championship tournament a season ago after going 10-16 and placing third at the regional qualifier.
Sophomore
Claire DiCugno enters her second collegiate season ranked No. 4 at 130 pounds. The Lake Tapps, Wash. native finished fourth at the national tournament last season and finished the season with a 31-8 record with 21 wins coming by technical fall.
Redshirt sophomore
Holly Beaudoin will enter the season ranked No. 3 at 136 pounds after placing sixth at the national tournament last season. The Washington native has a career record of 25-13 in her two years of competition.
The Mavericks will open the season with a set of duals on Friday November 4 a day prior to the Maverick Open in Brownson Arena.
