Mavs tabbed third, fourth in first national polls

No. 3 ranking is women's highest ever

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Both Colorado Mesa University swimming and diving teams were highly ranked in the first set of national rankings, released by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) on Friday.

The Maverick women were ranked third in the organization's October set of the Division II Top 25 Dual Meet Rankings poll while the CMU men were tabbed fourth.

The No. 3 ranking for the CMU women is the highest in program history and comes after the Mavericks finished a program-best fifth at last season's NCAA Division II National Championships while getting out to a solid start this year.

The No. 4 men's ranking is equal to the Mavs' highest.  The Maverick men finished sixth at last year's national championships and are out to an even better start this season, claiming victories over four different NCAA Division I schools in their first two meets.

The CMU women received 276 points in the polling of ten representatives from Division II institutions and select media outlets.  The Mavs trail only Nova Southeastern, voted No. 1 unanimously with 300 points, and Tampa, second with 288 points.  Indianapolis is fourth with 261 points while West Florida is fifth in the poll with 245.

The Mavs and No. 23 Oklahoma Christian are the only Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference squads in the poll.

In the men's poll, CMU racked up 268 points in the poll.  Indianapolis is the unanimous No. 1 with 300 points while McKendree (287) and Drury (270) are ranked second and third, respectively.  Tampa rounds out the top five with 247, just ahead of Grand Valley State (244).

Oklahoma Christian is ninth in the poll with 210 points while new RMAC affiliate member UT-Permian Basin is ranked 24th with 17 points.  The Colorado School of Mines is also receiving votes.

The Mavericks are off this weekend but will return to action next Saturday (Oct. 22) when they host Division I Wyoming in a 1 p.m. dual meet in the El Pomar Natatorium.

The next CSCAA polls are scheduled to be released on Nov. 18.
