Mavs Best Crosstown Rival in Blizzard in Brownson

Grand Junction, CO – Avenging last season's loss, and in front of a packed house, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team bested crosstown rivals Western Colorado Saturday night, creating a chilly environment for the visitors throughout the Blizzard in Brownson by Coca Cola event.

The Mavericks finished 51.6 percent from the field, keeping one of the league's top scorers Matthew Ragsdale, under his season average. Using a 54-34 edge in paint points, CMU also tallied six blocks throughout the night.

Trevor Baskin led the way with 21-points and 13-rebounds for the double-double, also adding three blocks along the way to bring his season total to 37.

Blaise Threatt put in 17-points, close behind was Georgie Dancer with 16, followed by Jared Small with 11 to round out Maverick players in double-figures.

After trading points throughout the first 10-minutes of the night, the Mavericks started to create distance taking a 25-15 lead following a jumper from Threatt. That lead would fade into a 2-point game, before the visitors put up a half-court shot that made its way through the hoop to take a 32-31 lead at the half.

Coming out of the break the Mavericks established a paint presence early, opening up a 16-1 run in the first five minutes of the second period.

They would refuse to let up for the remainder of the night, creating distance while also keeping the Mountaineers quiet at 39.3 percent. Ragsdale led his team with 20-points, Elijah Davidson with nine rebounds and 13 points.

Colorado Mesa moves to 16-8 and 10-5 against conference opponents, turning their attention to Westminster who they travel to on Tuesday. Game time is slated for 7 p.m. in the Behnken Field House.
