Mavericks Upend Previously Unbeaten Rangers

Denver, CO – For the second time this season the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team spoiled an undefeated conference record, upending the No. 12 Regis Rangers Saturday night in Denver. The 86-80 win gives the Mavericks the weekend split, six players contributing double-figures in the victory.

Behind an efficient 60 percent, the Mavericks knocked down two more baskets, and one more 3-pointer, also winning the board battle, 31-27.

Leading the way for all scorers was Reece Johnson who finished with a season and career high 25-points, matching his season high in 3-pointers, going 5-of-6 from deep. Blaise Threatt and Georgie Dancer added 13 apiece, Jared Small with 11, Trevor Baskin and Mac Riniker chipping in 10 each.

Under 10-minutes to go in the first half, Regis would start to pull away taking their biggest lead of the period at 13, converting on a layup off a Maverick turnover. That lead would shrink as Colorado Mesa went on a 12-0 run around the 4-minute mark to pull within three.

That trend would continue on into the opening minutes of the second half as the Mavericks took over, gaining a 9-point edge early on. The lead would build to as much as 15 throughout the second half.

Regis put in a pair of threes late in an effort to close the gap, but their final attempt would miss, Small grabbing the rebound to secure the final score. In the second period alone, the Mavs were 16-of-24 from the field, and knocked in six threes in eight attempts.

Moving to 15-7 overall and 9-4 in the league, Colorado Mesa will return to Brownson Arena hosting Fort Lewis, Friday. Then neighbors Western Colorado make their way over Saturday for Blizzard in Brownson. Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
