Grand Junction, CO – Behind a season best 69.2 shooting percentage, the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team shot down the visiting Colorado Christian Cougars Saturday night in Brownson Arena.
The team's hot hands also mark the third highest shooting percentage in a conference game since at least 2004. The Mavericks hit at a high percentage throughout the night, draining 12 3-pointers, their second straight night with double-figures in that category. They also collected 37 rebounds and six blocks on the defensive end, holding the visitors to 37.7 shooting on the night.
Trevor Baskin led the team with 23-points, adding three assists, six rebounds and a block.
Mac Riniker contributed 18-points,
Blaise Threatt with 16.
Reece Johnson (14) and
Jared Small (13) rounded out five players who finished with double-figures, both of which who drained four, 3-pointers.
The first four baskets of the night for the Mavs were all came beyond the arc, opening up a quick 10-point lead, not even 4-minutes in. Colorado Christian worked to stay within single digits, getting as close as five points behind. In a bit of déjà vu, the Cougars knocked down a last second 3-pointer to close out the half, but the Mavs headed into the break ahead by six.
Andy Stafford scored the nine points out of the gate for CCU, but CMU would answer back with their own series of baskets.
Up by 11 just three minutes in the Mavs lead would only build throughout the rest of the second period.
Sam Goulet got in on the scoring, driving in for a couple layups the first points for his career and pushing the team over the 100-point mark, capping off the night with a block.
DJ McDonald and Ross Williams finished with 25 points a piece to lead the Cougars offensive efforts.
Moving to 14-6 on the season, Colorado Mesa heads over to the front range for some tough matchups, meeting up with Regis and Colorado School of Mines to continue conference play.
