GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –Colorado Mesa women's soccer put together an impressive defensive performance in Sunday afternoon's game against Black Hills State on Maverick Field. The Mavericks did not grant the visitors a single shot on goal throughout 90-minutes of play on their way to a 2-0 victory to open conference play.
The Mavericks took 25 shots, landing eight on frame, while the Yellowjackets struggled to get into scoring position taking just three shots on the day.
There were many an opportunity for the Mavericks to add to the scoreboard, however they would be turned away by nine offside calls. Regardless, they held possession for over fifty percent of the contest and spent a majority of the game on the Yellowjackets half of the field.
Mira Houck got the game rolling barely two-minutes in, winding through defenders and taking a left footed blast into the top-right portion of the netting to give the Mavs an early lead.
Play continued and CMU would not let up, maintaining possession and putting the pressure on Black Hills to keep them out of scoring territory.
Later in the first half, the Maverick offense would charge towards the goal,
Addie Randel getting a touch before colliding with the keeper. In an attempt to clear the ball, a BHSU defender took a heavy touch that put the ball into the net resulting in an own goal, and another tally for CMU.
The 2-0 lead would hold up for the rest of the afternoon,
Chloe Dody not seeing much action in between the posts but picking up her fourth win of the season and first clean sheet.
Next weekend takes the Mavericks on the road to CSU Pueblo and UC Colorado Springs for a pair of RMAC contests.
