GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's cross country team placed three runners, including two true freshmen, in the top ten as the Mavericks placed second at Saturday's Gig Leadbetter Maverick Stampede here at Lincoln Park Golf Course.
The Mavs recorded a team score of 36 points, just six more than Westminster, which had four of the top seven overall finishers to take the win, including individual champion Courtney McAlindon, who completed the 5-kilometer course in 18 minutes, 39.61 seconds.
The CMU triathlon team finished third with 57 points led by a ninth place finish from
Shannon Feran, also a member of the CMU Track & Field squad. Western Colorado University only had two runners and did not post a team score.
Maverick senior
Lindsay Parsons led CMU's effort as she finished fourth overall and third amongst team scorers in 19:19.29. Freshman
Alyssa Britton was eighth overall and scored six points in 19:52.13 while fellow freshman
Ricky Maestas was just behind Feran in tenth with a time of 20:00.72. Maestas was representing the Mavericks for the first time after competing unattached in the first two meets of the season.
Maverick assistant coach Georgia Porter finished 11
th while
Ella Rosenkranz (20:01.04) and
Elaina Arcand (20:13.85) finished right behind in 12
th and 13
th, respectively. CMU freshman
Kendall White led a group of Mavs, competing unattached, taking 14
th in 20:16.53.
Triathlete
Paloma Suarez Davila also finished in the top-20, taking 18
th in 20:42.03.
CMU's men claimed their first meet win as a team since 2015.
The Mavs will continue their season on Friday in their biggest meet of the season thus far, competing at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
