Mavs dominate bottom half to record 6-1 win over FHSU

Romero, O'Rear both go 2-0

PUEBLO, Colo.— Halle Romero and Audrey O'Rear both went 2-0 while Macy Richards and Kenna Kelley both posted 6-0, 6-0 singles wins to lead the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team to a dominant 6-1 Pueblo Duals victory over Fort Hays State University on Saturday afternoon here at Pueblo City Park.

The victory was CMU's first in three tries over the weekend and the brief fall season.  The Tigers fell to 2-2 with the loss.

Romero teamed with Issy Coman for a 6-1 No. 2 doubles win over Fiorella Mendez and Heidi Lubbers before claiming a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Mendez at No. 3 singles.  Meanwhile, O'Rear and Paige Furin clinched the doubles point with 6-4 victory over Aliyah Frederick and Hope Lubbers in the third flight.

The other doubles match was left unfinished.

In singles, the Mavericks dominated the bottom half of the lineup winning five of the six sets in the No. 4, 5 and 6 flights without giving up a single game.

Richards defeated Frederick at the No. 4 match while fellow freshman Kelley, in the singles lineup for the first time in her young career, did the same over Hope Lubbers at No. 6.  O'Rear then clinched the dual with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Heidi Lubbers at No. 5.

Later, Maike Waldburger claimed a 6-1, 6-2 win over Maria Paz Diaz at No. 2.

FHSU's lone point came in the No. 1 singles match as Steffany Stemmer claimed a hard-fought, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-8) win over Coman.

Julianna Campos and Furin also won pro-set exhibition singles matches over Gracen Friess, by 8-0 and 8-2 scores.

The Mavericks will be off next weekend before wrapping up the fall at the ITA West Regional in Fresno, California, which will be contested Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
