PUEBLO, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team dropped a pair of decisions on Friday at the Pueblo Duals in what was their first team matches of the fall season.
The Mavericks fell 7-0 to Nebraska-Kearney in the afternoon session before falling 6-1 to Dallas Baptist in the evening.
Both opponents improved to 3-0 with their respective victories over the Mavs.
Against DBU, freshman
Macy Richards claimed CMU's only point of the day with a 3-set No. 4 singles win. Richards won the first set over Sanne Janssen, 6-4 before dropping the third. She then outlasted the Dutchwoman, 10-8 in the split set tie-breaker.
Richards is now a team-best 4-2 thus far in the season.
Against Nebraska-Kearney, the Lopers won all six singles matches in straight sets and dropped just five total games in the three doubles affairs.
Issy Coman put up CMU's toughest fight but was downed in a pair of 6-4 sets by Melisa Becerra at No. 1 singles.
Maverick freshman
Kenna Kelley did win an exhibition singles match over the Lopers' Clare Plachy, 6-3, 6-4.
The matches against DBU were much tighter although the Patriots won all three doubles matches by 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4 margins. In singles play, Coman once again put up quite a fight before dropping her No. 1 match to Taylor Leslie, the 2020-21 Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, 6-4, 6-4.
Kelley and
Paige Furin also won exhibition matches for the Mavs in the night-cap.
CMU will wrap up the weekend with a Saturday morning (8 a.m.) match against Fort Hays State at Pueblo City Park.
