Box Score DENVER— Colorado Mesa University freshmen
Paige Furin and
Macy Richards both won their respective Back Draw singles brackets while teaming for a perfect 2-0 record in doubles play to help lead the Maverick women's tennis team to a strong performance in Saturday and Sunday's MSU Denver Fall Invitational, the opening tournament of CMU's season.
Richards, a native of Bountiful, Utah, went 3-1 overall in the B Singles draw winning all three of her Back Draw matches in straight sets, including a 6-0, 6-2 win over Marie Coll of the host Roadrunner program in the final.
Meanwhile, Furin, a product of Henderson, Nevada, went 3-1 in the C Singles bracket claiming a back draw final win over Colorado College's Olivia Dicks by a 6-1, 6-3 score.
In doubles, the Maverick newcomers received a first round bye before claiming 8-2 and 8-6 quarterfinal and semifinal round wins, respectively. Their final was not played.
Issy Coman and
Halle Romero also had a solid doubles tournament as they went 3-0 before having to default in the A Draw final due to injury.
Elsewhere,
Maike Waldburger won her first two B Singles draw matches before falling in the main draw semifinals. Her second win was over teammate
Audrey O'Rear, who went 1-1 in singles.
Meanwhile,
Makenna Livingston and Coman each won a match in the A Singles Draw while
Halle Romero and Campos each went 1-1 in the B and C Singles Draws, respectively. Campos, who received a first round bye, advanced to the Main Draw semifinals.
In other doubles results, Livingston, a freshman out of Huntington Beach, California, and Waldburger went 2-1 and advanced to the main draw semifinal in the top flight.
The Mavericks will begin the dual-meet portion of their season this Friday and Saturday at the Pueblo Duals, where they will face Nebraska-Kearney and Dallas Baptist on Friday and Texas-Permian Basin and Fort Hays State on Saturday.
