DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa men's golf team opened their season on Monday (Sept. 13) at The Writz at Mile High that was played at Bear Creek Golf CLub and co-hosted by Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian. Fourteen schools are competing in the tournament and all completed two full rounds today as the teams completed their rounds into the night.
The Mavericks are in contention for a top-five finish as they sit in seventh-place with a two round total of 592 (+16) just eight strokes behind fifth-place Westminster and five strokes behind sixth-place UCCS. Midwestern State and Colorado Christian are leading the tournament as both schools fired an even-par, 576.
Making his collegiate debut, 
Timmy Cavarno led the Mavericks with a 76-70 in his two rounds for a t-15th place finish. He shot a four-over, 76 in his first round, carding one birdie in the round but closed out with a 2-under, 70 with four birdies on his card. The freshman is seven strokes off the overall lead and one stroke better than his teammate, 
Yael Chahin.
Chahin had a little bit of a roller coaster day. In his opening round he fired a 2-under, 70 with four birdies in the round while in the afternoon round, he shot a 5-over, 77. in that round, he eagled the par-4, No. 18 hole, one of just eagles in the tournament. The sophomore is in a tie for 20th position on the overall leaderboard.
Tomorrow's third and final round begins at 8am.
