GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – It was a battle between rivals Colorado Mesa and Westminster in Saturday's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament final, with the visiting Griffins getting the best of the Mavericks with a 17-13 decision.
Westminster claimed revenge after dropping the previous two meetings including the last outing where CMU clinched the regular season title.
The Mavericks took six more shots, and won the battle of ground balls as well as held the upper hand in faceoffs.
Trent Pernell put together a hat trick, while
Jed Brummett and
Carson Schwark put in a pair of goals each.
Joey Quinn stepped in during the second period and finished out the game with five saves.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Adrenaline rushing, the Mavericks captured two quick goals from
AJ Switzer and
Carson Schwark to take the early lead. The Griffins netted their first goal not long after, but was met by two more CMU goals for the early 4-1 lead.
Westminster's offense came alive and did not let up, going on a 10-0 run for the 10-4 advantage. Pernell responded with back-to-back goals, followed by one from Brummett to close out the first half.
Braden Plock continued the Mavericks attack opening the third period with his first of the day, as the team's traded points throughout the period, with the home team working tirelessly to close the gap.
CMU strung together two more goals in the final frame, but could not overcome the early deficit as the Griffins completed the upset.
