Box Score PUEBLO, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team came from behind for the third time in the series with their conference rival as they took a 13-8 win over the CSU Pueblo ThunderWolves on Saturday evening at Runyon Field. The win gives the Mavericks 21 straight victories heading into the series finale.
With the win, coupled with Mines' doubleheader sweep of UCCS, the Mavericks claimed their ninth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season title and 27
th overall regular season crown. With that, they will now host the RMAC Tournament in two weeks at Suplizio Field.
Austin Lorenz had his best outing as a Maverick in relief of starter
Trevin Reynolds. Lorenz worked out of a jam in the sixth inning and went on to allow just three hits, walked one and struck out four in four innings of work. He improved his record to 2-0 on the season.
Matthew Turner provided much of the offense for Colorado Mesa as he finished the game 2-for-3. Turner hit the first of two home runs in the game in the first inning as he hit a solo home run to put the Mavericks up 1-0.
The second one delivered the big blow to the ThunderWolves. In the top of the fifth inning, he hammered a three-run home run to right center field that gave the Mavericks an 8-7 lead after trailing 7-3 after two innings. The two home runs give the junior 18 home runs on the season to lead the RMAC.
Conrad Villafuerte and
Haydn McGeary each had three hits in the game. Villafuerte had two runs scored and two runs driven in with a double.
Seven of the nine hitters in the lineup had a hit and a run scored.
The Mavericks and ThunderWolves will close out their series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game beginning at noon at Rawlings Field.
