Box Score 2 GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks fell in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament final 18-9 to UCCS after forcing the 'if' game earlier in the day. The Mavericks were seeking their seventh straight tournament title.
The big innings proved costly to the Mavericks as UCCS scored four runs in the first inning and then put up eight in the fifth inning before scoring three more in the ninth.
Lefty
Austin Lorenz was saddled with the loss and fell to 2-1 on the season.
After falling behind 4-0 after the top half of the first inning, Colorado Mesa battled back to take the lead by four 8-4 heading into the fifth inning.
Outfielder
Matthew Turner went 2-for-5 with three runs scored after hitting his 22
nd round-tripper of the season. The Broomfield native saw an 0-1 count before hitting the solo home run.
Turner, McGeary and
Conrad Villafuerte each had two-hits in the game.
The Mountain Lions claimed their first tournament title in their five-year history with the win and they earn the conference's automatic bid into the regional tourney.
Colorado Mesa should be a shoo-in to make the regional and will likely still be the top seed heading into the NCAA South Central Region Tournament that begins next Thursday.
Colorado Mesa 2, UCCS 1 (Earlier in the day) –
Chase Hamilton scored on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth inning to propel Colorado Mesa to a 2-1 win to force the 'if' game. The Mavericks scored one run in the first inning on a RBI single by
Jordan Stubbings then didn't score again until Hamilton's heroics.
Gage Edward's pitched fantastic in his second start of the season. He allowed just one run on four hits walked one and struck out eight in seven and two-thirds innings of work. His lone mistake of the game came in the fourth inning when he gave up a home run to the Mountain Lions' Evan Richards.
The COVID sophomore worked out of jams in both the sixth and eighth innings before giving way to
Anthony Durbano in the bullpen in that eighth inning. Durbano closed it out in the eighth and earned the win by pitching a scoreless ninth.
Matthew Turner was the lone Maverick hits in the game finishing 3-for-4.
