#1 Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader from Colorado Christian

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the doubleheader sweep of the Colorado Christian Cougars on Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field. The wins move the Mavericks record to 36-3 on the season and 33-2 in the conference.
 
In game one of the day, the Maverick bats exploded for 22 runs on 17 hits in a 22-3 win over the Cougars to open the day. They scored runs in five of the six innings they batted in and scored more than just one run in four of those innings.
 
Colorado Mesa scored four runs in the first inning, three runs in the second and then went crazy scoring 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The scored those 12 runs on five hits and benefitted from five walks in the inning.
 
The Mavericks hit four doubles in the inning and scored three runs on a three-run home run by Tyler Parker. Parker finished the game 4-for-5 with three runs scored and the three runs driven in on the home run.
 
Haydn McGeary finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs and four runs driven in. McGeary got the Mavericks on the board in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run homer that barely cleared the fence in right field, giving the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.
 
McGeary stepped to the plate in the bottom of the next inning and blasted his second home run of the game, this one a no-doubter to left field to give the Mavericks a 7-1 lead. The two home runs in the game gives the sophomore 16 home runs on the season.
 
Tanner Rempel hit his second home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth inning to round out the Maverick home run hitters in the game.
 
Harrison Rodgers and Chase Hamilton each had multi-hit games as well.
 
Ryan Day had plenty of run support to earn his seventh win of the season. Day allowed three runs on four hits, walked one and struck out three in five innings of work while throwing just 65 pitches.
 
Day gave way to Isaac Hayen who pitched the final two innings while surrendering just one hit.
 
In the nightcap, Matthew Turner made some program history as he blasted a pair of home runs to lead the Mavericks to an 8-4 win over Colorado Christian.
 
Turner hit the first of his two home runs in the second inning, a solo home run that cleared the fence in right field and gave the Mavericks a 6-0 lead.
 
His second home run came in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to right field. The home runs in the game give him 21 on the season and Turner becomes the first Maverick since 1997 to hit more than 20 home runs in the season when Chris McClure hit a school record 25 home runs.
Turner and Tyler Parker were the lone Mavericks with multiple hits in the game.
 
Kannon Handy got the start in game three of the weekend and pitched magnificent. He allowed one run on two hits, walked one and struck out seven in five innings of work. Handy is now 4-0 on the season.
 
The two teams will meet in the final game of the regular season at 12pm at Suplizio Field.
