TUCSON, Ariz.— Ara Norwood and
Tye Wedhorn came from a set down to win their leading-fifth match of the season to lead the Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team's efforts against UC-Davis in the Mavericks' final match of the weekend at the Arizona Invitational.
The Aggies won the other four and took the dual, 4-1.
Norwood, who became CMU's winningest player in program history on Friday, won for the 20
th time in her career as she and Wedhorn dropped the opening set 21-10, before rallying for 21-16 and 15-11 second and third set wins over the Aggies' No. 5 pair of Alicia Letvin and Bailey Herdman.
The Mavericks also came up just short in three other sets as
Sierra Hunt and
Hahni Johnson dropped a 28-26, 21-17 decision at No. 3 while
Ashton Reese and
Sabrina VanDeList dropped their No. 4 match, 23-21, 21-19.
The Mavericks finished the weekend tournament 0-4 with two of their losses coming to top 10 nationally-ranked foes. They are now 3-10.
The beach squad will be off next week as many of the Mavericks will play their final indoor matches of the spring season while hosting the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Mavs then return to the beach in Tavares, Florida for the Apr. 16-18 AVCA Small College Beach Championships, which will wrap up their 2021 campaign. The Mavs finished fourth at that in 2019 before last year's event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
