Men's Lacrosse Earn 23-3 win in Home Opener

The Mavericks hosted their first home game since March 8, 2020, defeating Adams State, 23-3

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – March 8, 2020. That was the last time the Colorado Mesa (7-1, 4-0 RMAC) men's lacrosse played their last home game. Over a year later, the Mavericks played host to Adams State Sunday, scoring 11 runs in the first quarter alone en-route to a 23-3 victory.
The team has won seven straight games and remain undefeated in conference action.

Six different Mavericks posted multiple goals, three with hat tricks including Jake Keyes and Hunter Holcomb who finished the day with four goals each. Jed Brummett was behind three of the team's goals as well.

James Steinke distributed a team high four assists, followed by Keyes and Carson Schwark who added three apiece.

Between three players, the Mavericks finished 26-of-30 in faceoffs, with Dylan Checketts going 7-of-7, to go along with four ground balls. CMU out shot their opponent 56-19, scooped up 53 ground balls to the Grizzlies 20 and were a perfect 16-of-16 in clears.

Nolan Hoffman picked up his fifth win season, and remains undefeated when defending the net.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Just eight seconds into the game, Keyes with help from Kyle O'Brien put the Mavericks on the board, in what was just a beginning of the quarter's scoring. A series of CMU players would be behind the team's 11-goals in the first quarter. The first time the teams met, CMU had scored just 12 goals total.

As the team's entered the second quarter, the scoring continued as the Mavericks built up to a 15-0 lead. The Grizzlies' Kyle Butler finally got his team on the board in the eight minute, boosting him to double-digit goals on the season.

Before the half let out, CMU tacked on two more goals on man-up possessions for a comfortable 17-1 edge.

Half way through the third quarter, the Mavs reached 20 goals behind Micah Payton's fifth goal of the season. The home team would add three more for the final 23-goal total. ASU scored in the final seconds of the third quarter, and again in the fourth which was the only goal in the final frame that utilized a running clock.

UP NEXT
With the second postponement of their game against CSU Pueblo being official, the team will move forward and prepare to host Westminster on Friday, April 30 to claim the regular season title and the opportunity to host the conference tournament.
