Top-ranked Mavericks Sweep Highlands

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the four-game sweep of New Mexico Highlands on Sunday (Apr. 25) with a 5-4 come-from behind victory at Suplizio Field.

The Cowboys jumped out to the early 4-0 lead in the second inning with two of those runs coming unearned after an error extended the inning putting the Mavericks behind for the second time in the series.

Maverick starter Kannon Handy settled in and pitched a good game. Handy allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits, walked four and struck out nine in seven innings of work.

Colorado Mesa's offense took awhile to get going as Cowboy starter JT Mossberg had the Mavericks off balance for seven and a third innings. Mossberg allowed five runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out three. At one point, he retired 11 in a row before Harrison Rodgers stepped to the plate.

Rodgers belted a 2-2 pitch over the wall in left field to break up the shutout and got the Mavericks on the board. The round tripper was his seventh of the season and made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.

Jordan Stubbings stepped to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and delivered a solo home run to left field to make it 4-2. The homer was his eighth of the season.

Colorado Mesa received a lift from an unlikely spot in the top of the eighth inning as Austin Lorenz stepped on the mound in relief. Lorenz sat the Cowboys down in order for the first time since the first inning.

In the eighth inning the Mavericks tied the game at 4-4 after Haydn McGeary delivered a double to left center field that scored Matthew Turner from second base. Kian Manmano pinch-ran for McGeary and scored the go-ahead run on Tanner Rempel's RBI single up the middle.

Garrett Tisdall came in for the ninth and retired Highlands in order for his first save of the season.

The win pushes the Mavericks win streak to 16 games and their season record to 28-2 on the season and 25-1 in the conference.

Colorado Mesa will now play Regis in a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at noon in Denver.
