Doumer matches CMU record with 3-home run game

Mavs take weekend series with two Sunday run-rule wins

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University redshirt senior Brooke Doumer matched the Maverick softball record for home runs in a game as she hit three to lead the Mavericks to the first of two 5-inning mercy-rule victories over visiting UCCS on Sunday at the CMU Softball Stadium.

After being held to just three runs in the second game of a rare doubleheader split on Saturday, the Mavericks came out rocking on Sunday putting up 25 runs on 25 hits to post 14-4 and 11-3 victories while improving to 26-2 on the season and in conference play.  UCCS fell to 14-20 overall and to 14-17 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Mavericks, ranked 19th in the NFCA Division II Coaches' Poll, have now won all seven of their 4-game series this season, sweeping five of them.  They have recorded 16 mercy-rule victories and have scored 287 runs in their 28 games, good for a national-leading average of 10.25 per game.

Game 1

On Sunday, the Mavericks hit five home runs in the first game as the lead-off hitting Doumer did the trifecta with shots to left, right and center field in the first three innings to become just the second Maverick to ever hit three home runs in the same game.  Current assistant coach Kelly Reese (Adams) was the other, doing so against UCCS on Mar. 10, 2001.

Meanwhile, Aislyn Sharp hit a solo home run in the fifth inning before Ellie Smith delivered a walk-off 3-run bomb later in the inning as the Mavericks wrapped up the first game win.

Doumer, who had also hit CMU's lone home run on Sunday, also drew a walk in the game and went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and four RBIs.  Lauren Wedman and Ellie Smith, the No. 2 and 3 hitters in the Maverick lineup, also had 3-hit games as the Mavericks banged out 14, including seven for extra bases.  Smith, who has a national-leading 18, and Nicole Christensen added doubles.

Wedman went 3-for-4 with three runs and a pair of RBIs while Smith was also 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs.  Christensen added a pair of RBIs while Sharp and Drew Sims both had 2-hit games.

Meanwhile, Paige Adair earned the win going 4 2/3 innings while giving up just five hits and four runs while striking out four Mountain Lions.

Adair retired the Mountain Lions in order to begin the game before Doumer hit the third pitch she and the Mavericks saw on a towering blast to left.  Wedman then singled before back-to-back doubles by Smith and Christensen gave the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.  Sarah Staudle then later had an RBI groundout to give the Mavs a 4-0 lead after one inning, which saw them record five hits.

Doumer then hit a 1-out homer in the second before an Ally Distler sacrifice fly made the score 6-0 after another 3-hit second inning.

The Mavericks then extended the lead to 8-0 on a 2-run Doumer homer in the third.

However, the Mountain Lions sliced the lead in half on one swing as Brianna Santos hit a fifth-inning grand slam to make the score, 8-4, as UCCS temporarily avoided the mercy-rule

After reliever Shea Mauser recorded the third out two plays later, the Maverick batters went back to work as a Sharp hit a 1-out home before pinch hitter Sarah Jorissen drew a walk.  After an infield single by Sims and an intentional walk to Doumer loaded the bases, Wedman, the RMAC's top hitter in numerous statistical categories, delivered a 2-run single setting up Smith for a walk-off 3-run homer on the next pitch as the Mavericks put up six runs in the inning to clinch the win.

Game 2

The Mavericks finished the second game with 11 hits as they jumped out to 4-0 and 7-1 leads after the second and third innings before another 4-spot in the fourth helped the Mavericks seal up yet another mercy-rule win.

Ashley Bradford, who went 3-for-3, had CMU's only extra-base hit, a double, as the Mavericks singled UCCS to death.  The Mavericks had ten hits and also drew five walks and another free pass on a hit by pitch putting pressure on the UCCS defense, which committed two costly errors which led to five unearned runs.

Wedman also had another strong game going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs while Sims and Doumer joined Bradford by scoring three runs.

After both teams were held without a run in the first, the Mavericks avenged leaving the bases loaded by plating four runs in the bottom of the second.   Sharp and Bradford began the frame with singles before Sims reached on an error and sacrifice bunt.  After a fielder's choice, Wedman drew a bases loaded walk before a sacrifice fly by Smith put CMU up 2-0.

Christensen was then hit by a pitch to re-load the bases before Distler hit a 2-run single to double the lead.

Santos then hit her second home run of the day for UCCS to put the Mountain Lions on the scoreboard in the top of the third.  However, the Mavericks regained a 4-run cushion in the bottom half of the frame when Bradford doubled before moving to third on a Sims bunt single and scoring on a wild pitch.

Later in the inning, Christensen delivered a 2-run single to plate Doumer, who had walked and stole second, and Wedman, who had singled.

Trailing 7-1, the Mountain Lions did get consecutive RBI singles from Peyton Reisman and Taylor White to cut the gap to 7-3.  However, the Mavericks scored four runs in the bottom half of the fourth, all on one play.

With the bases loaded, Wedman singled up the middle to drive in Bradford and Sims.  The speedy Doumer was also running to third when the throw from the outfield deflected off her and back in to the outfield, allowing her to score.  Wedman also hustled around the base paths scoring the game's final run.

The Mountain Lions then managed just one hit in the top of the fifth as the Mavs clinched the victory.

Shea Mauser (5-1) earned the victory going 3 1/3 innings while giving up four hits and striking out three.  Smith then came in and picked up her first save after allowing just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

Doumer finished the 4-game weekend series hitting 8-for-12 (.667) with her four home runs.  She also scored ten runs, drove in seven, drew four walks and stole four bases.  Wedman was also 9-for-15 (.600) with seven RBIs as she raised her season-long batting average to .578 and her season-long RBI total to 56, good for an average of exactly two RBIs per game.
