Atahulapa Lifts Mavericks Past Griffins in Double-Overtime Thriller

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah.  – The Colorado Mesa (4-0-1, 4-0-1 RMAC) men's soccer team avenged their only tie of the season, Sunday afternoon on Dumke Field, stunning the Griffins in double-overtime, thanks to Ramses Atahualpa's golden goal in the 104th minute.

It was a battle just like the first time the two teams met on Maverick Field back in March. The Mavericks led in total shots with 18, targeting seven at the twine.
Westminster took just eight shots, and three on goal all of which were saved by Brendan Brown who also picked up his fourth shutout of the season.

After going scoreless in regulation, the teams headed into overtime. CMU did not allow the Griffins to a take shot in the extra minutes of play, while they themselves took one in the first period and three in the second.

A Griffins attempt to clear the ball was met by CMU midfield, and redirected back in Westminster territory.

Ramses Atahulapa had possession, and was tripped up by a Griffin defender just outside of the top-left side of the goal box, setting up a free kick.

After setting up, Atahualpa took a strike around the defenders, as the ball founds its ways into the opposite side of the Griffin goal passed Noah Larkin, who had made six key saves up until that point.

The goal marked Atahualpa's first of the season, and gives the Mavericks their fourth straight win and a good chance of making the RMAC tournament in the coming weeks.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament is scheduled from April 20-25, with the higher seeds hosting the quarterfinals and then a final site being determined from there.
