Rodgers' Two Homers Paces #1 Mavericks to Series Sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the series sweep of #19 MSU Denver on Sunday (Apr. 11) after a 12-7 win at Suplzio Field. The win gives the Mavericks a four-game lead in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.

The Mavericks put up crooked numbers in three innings to give them the edge. They scored three in the second, three in the third and five in the fifth.

Harrison Rodgers had quite the day at the plate for Colorado Mesa. He delivered a big blow in the second inning as he belted the first of two home runs on the day. Rodgers belted a 1-1 pitch over the wall in right field to give the Mavericks a 4-1 cushion at the time. The home run was a three-run shot and was his fourth of the season.

Rodgers delivered his second home run in the fifth inning and went right down the right field line. The San Diego native had to wait at home plate for a few second to make sure it was going to stay fair then began his trot around the bases for the second time on the day. This one a two-run homer and was his fifth of the season, giving the Mavericks a 12-5 advantage.

Spencer Bramwell also delivered a two-run home run in the fifth inning for his seventh of the season. This one was to straight away center field and kept carrying through the air before leaving.

Rodgers and Bramwell combined to go 4-for-7 in the game with three home runs, a double and eight runs driven in.

That was all Maverick starter Kannon Handy would need as he earned his third win of the season. The lefty allowed five runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out six in five innings of work.

He gave way to Cade Nicol who pitched the final four innings to earn the 'rule-book' save. Nicol allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out a career-high seven.

The win pushes the Mavericks record to 22-2 on the season and 19-1 in the conference. It also gives them their second win streak of at least ten games or more in the season.

Colorado Mesa will now head out on the road to face current second place Regis in a four game series beginning on Friday.
