GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Corpus Christi, Texas native
Halle Romero picked up a pair of wins against the Dallas Baptist University Patriots from her home state to lead Colorado Mesa University's effort in their women's tennis home-opener on Tuesday here at the Elliott Tennis Center.
Romero teamed with
Issy Coman for a 6-1 No. 2 doubles win and then proceeded to win her No. 4 singles match by a 6-4, 6-3 margin over Leslie Omeire. However, that was not enough as the Patriots remained unbeaten at 5-0 as they downed the now 6-6 Mavericks by a 6-1 count.
Romero now leads the Mavericks with 12 wins this season— six in singles and six in doubles.
In doubles, she and Coman dominated Adriana Carpenter and Taylor Leslie. However, the Mavericks then dropped tight No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matches, including the third flight affair in a tie-breaker as the Patriots took the doubles point.
Their visitors' momentum continued in singles play as they would on to win three of the first four completed matches before CMU sisters Carolena and
Julianna Campos both dropped third-set tie-breakers with the dual already decided.
The Mavericks have now dropped six straight team matches after getting off their best start in program history. They resume the season Friday when they will play a neutral-site PacWest Conference match against Dominican (Calif.) in Denver. That match is scheduled to be played at 3:30 p.m. at MSU Denver's Regency Athletic Complex although it may be moved indoors to Life Time Fitness in Centennial, Colorado if weather conditions dictate.
