Freshman lead Mavs to first PacWest tennis win

CMU snaps slid, moves back above .500 with 5-2 indoor win over Penguins

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.— Freshman Issy Coman and Julianna Campos both went 2-0 as the Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team bounced back above .500 while snapping a 6-match losing streak with a 5-2 win over Pacific West Conference rival Dominican University of California here inside the Randy Ross Tennis Center on Friday.

The Mavericks improved to 7-6 overall as they won two of the three doubles matches to take an early 1-0 lead before taking the first two and last two completed singles matches to claim the dual.

The Penguins slipped to 1-6 with the defeat.

In doubles, Lauren Thomas and Campos recorded a 6-4 win at No. 3 before Coman paired with Halle Romero for a 7-5 second-flight win over Haley Garcia and Taylor Lim to give the Mavericks the doubles point, despite Dominican's 6-4 No. 1 doubles win from Zoe Coggins and Amber Del Rosario.

The Mavericks then went up 3-0 overall as Maike Waldburger trounced Kaitlyn Nguyen, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles before Coman snapped an 8-match singles slide with a top-flight victory by a 6-1, 6-3 margin over Del Rosario.

Meanwhile, the Penguins got back into the match with wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles before senior Carolena Campos clinched CMU's victory with a hard-fought 3-set win over Lim at No. 3 singles.  The older Campos sister dropped the first set in a tie-breaker but came from behind to win the second and third sets over the Penguin senior with 6-4 and 6-0 margins.

Julianna Campos also dropped the first set of her No. 6 singles match to Garcia, 6-0, but roared back to take second by the same score.  With the team dual already decided, the younger Campos sister then claimed a 10-6 tie-breaker to complete the Mavericks' team win, their first over a PacWest foe since joining the conference as an affiliate member this year.

The Mavericks will now take a 3-week break from conference play but will play next Friday (Mar. 19), when they host Division I Weber State at 1 p.m. at the Elliott Tennis Center.
