GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – After suffering a tough season opening loss two days prior, the Colorado Mesa women's soccer team put in a last-minute goal in regulation, and played tough defense in overtime periods to secure a tie against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks on Sunday on Maverick Field.
The Skyhawks struck first, off the foot of freshman Aubrey Swindle, beating out the Maverick's goalkeeper with just a few minutes left to play in the first half.
Colorado Mesa had a series of good looks on goal, especially by freshman
Lila Dere, however the ball just didn't go in their favor. The Mavs out shot their opponent 21-6 on the day with Dere and
Lexi Newton leading the way with 7 and 5, respectively.
CMU continued to keep the pressure on the Skyhawk defense throughout the second half, but FLC's goalkeeper made some big saves to keep her team ahead.
With just minutes left and the Mavs still down,
Lexi Newton sent a pass across the last Skyhawk line of defense to an open
Sydney Hathaway who arched it into the back of the net to tie it up.
The Mavs came close to scoring a few times in the overtime periods, heading a couple passes that bounced off the crossbar before being knocked out by Skyhawk defenders.
Chloe Dody got her second start of her career, and played all 110-minutes in the goal recording a single save.
NEXT UP: Western State will make their way over to Maverick Field Saturday, Mar. 13 for a 1 p.m. nonconference matchup with the Mavericks.
