GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Captain
Lexi Newton dribbled around a defender and tucked the eventual game-winner into the net from the top of the box at the 62-minute mark to help lift the Colorado Mesa University women's soccer team to their first win of the young season, 2-0 over visiting Western Colorado University on Saturday afternoon here at Maverick Field.
That goal, assisted by
Sydney Hathaway, was the first Newton's season and broke a nil-nil deadlock despite the Mavericks controlling much of the possession in the first half before dominating the second.
The Mavericks then had two other apparent goals waved off for infractions but iced it just past the 83-minute mark when
Kristen Capan headed in a rebound in a flurry of action inside the Mountaineers' goal mouth.
The victory improved the Mavericks' record to 1-1-1 and was the first of new head coach
Megan Remec's career.
The Mountaineers fell to 0-2.
The Mavericks out-shot the visitors 9-2 in each half and 18-4 overall. They also had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks as the Mountaineers did not take a single one until the final minute, which was really the only pressure the visitors in the entirety of the second half.
Newton led all players with six shots throughout the afternoon, including four on goal.
Mikayla Eccher also took four shots, all on goal, and helped control the central midfield.
Laura Pelino took three of the Mountaineers' four shots.
WCU net-minder Grace Walker made seven saves in net while CMU freshman
Chloe Dody made the two necessary saves as the other end to record her first collegiate win and shutout.
The Mavericks will continue their season on Monday with a 2:15 p.m. scrimmage against Salt Lake Community College before traveling to Gunnison on Friday (Mar. 19) for a re-match with the Mountaineers.
