COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – It took just fifteen seconds into the second overtime period for the No. 17 Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team to secure the 13-12 thriller over Colorado College Monday afternoon at Washburn Field.
The Mavericks took nearly half has many shots, but doubled the amount of saves to outlast the Tigers. Each team came up with 15 faceoff wins, and despite having nine less ground balls, the Mavs picked up the one that mattered most that led to the eventual game winning goal.
Carson Schwark and
Trent Pernell scored four goals each to lead the attack. Schwark also added three assists, matched his season-high and has scored four goals in back-to-back outings. Purnell notched a new season high, and is on a three-game scoring streak.
Blake Amiatu made his first appearance in a Maverick uniform and had quite the debut scoring the game winner, making him an efficient 2-for-2 on the day.
Nolan Hoffman got the win defending the goal, racking up 11-saves and brings his season record to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Colorado College struck first a few minutes into the first period, but would end up being the lone score in the first fifteen minutes of play. The Tigers took 19 shots to the Mavs six in the opening period.
James Steinke tied it up six minutes into the second period, only to last a short minute as the home team scored to gain the slight lead. The teams went back and forth for the next few goals, until a 4-0 by CC gave them the 6-2 upper hand.
Schwark would end the run with three-minutes left in the half, and then again with thirty seconds to put his team within three going into the break.
The first five minutes of the third quarter were all CMU, as Pernell, Schwark and
Drew Eickelman recorded goals to tie the game at 7.
The Mavs took their first lead of the afternoon at 8:27 in the fourth quarter, on a connection from Steinke to Pernell for the 11-10 score.
Amiatu would then score his first goal under five minutes to play for the 12-11 lead. CC's Conrad Song would tie it back up at 12 and head to a faceoff for the game. CMU would win the faceoff but miss wide and send the ball the other way. The first Tiger's shot attempt bounced off the post, and then Hoffman came up with a key save to force the clear and the first overtime period.
Hoffman would come up with two saves in first set of extra minutes, as both teams were left scoreless.
Off the faceoff to start the second overtime, it appeared as if the Tigers were in control but
Jake Eickelman would swoop in and knock the ball out not once but twice, and gain the ground ball to start the offensive series. Eickelman quickly released the ball to Schwark who looked to score, but instead passed it off to an open Amiatu who placed it perfectly passed the Tigers goalie for the golden goal, and final 13-12 score.
The Mavericks will look to keep the momentum as they transition into conference play, taking the road trip west to Salt Lake City to take on RMAC rival Westminster on Friday.
