Coman claims wins in both ends of Saturday tennis double-header

Maverick freshman partners with Thomas for doubles win before claiming No. 2 singles thriller

ST. GEORGE, Utah— Colorado Mesa University freshman Issy Coman won a singles match and partnered with Lauren Thomas for a doubles win in each end of a NCAA inter-divisional women's tennis doubleheader at Dixie State University on Saturday here at the Trailblazer Tennis Courts.

The NCAA Division I Trailblazers won the duals 7-0 and 6-1 to improve to 4-11 on the year.  CMU fell to 7-9 overall with five of their defeats coming at the hands of Division I foes.

Coman and Thomas won their No. 2 doubles match over DSU sisters Sabrina and Katelyn Longson, 6-4 in the morning match although the Trailblazers won the No. 1 and 3 doubles matches and all six singles matches of the opening dual.

In the afternoon, Coman came back for a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12) thriller over Alexandra Hildreth at No. 2 singles giving the Mavericks' their lone point of the day.  DSU had won all three doubles matches in the afternoon.

Although she did not win, Maike Waldburger also had a strong day at the top of the Maverick lineup.  In the morning, she took her No. 2 singles match against Hildreth to three sets before falling in a 10-8 split-set tiebreaker.   In the afternoon, Waldburger and Carolena Campos dropped a No. 1 doubles tie-breaker, 7-5.  Waldburger then fell to Kyra Harames, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 in the No. 1 singles match after she and Coman switched spots to avoid facing the same opponents in both legs of the doubleheader.

The Mavericks, who are 4-4 against NCAA Division II foes this season, will continue their season next Saturday with a scrimmage against Seward County (Kan.) Community College in Denver.  They will then return to Denver to face Pacific West Conference and in-state rival MSU Denver on Apr. 9 while starting a 3-day, 4-match swing down the front range.
