Fourth-inning barrages lead CMU to doubleheader, series sweeps

No. 22 Mavs move to 12-0 with 13-2, 8-0 mercy-rule wins

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University softball team scored a combined 14 fourth-inning runs to sweep a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader and weekend series from visiting Adams State University.  The Mavericks won Sunday's games by 13-2 and 8-0 margins, both in five innings as they improved to 12-0 (12-0 RMAC) on the season.  The Mavericks, who have now defeated the Grizzlies in 19 straight games since 2015, had also scored eight other fourth-inning runs in 12-4 and 14-6 mercy-rule victories on Saturday.

The Grizzlies fell to 5-13 overall and to 5-11 in conference play this year with Sunday's losses.

CMU banged out a combined 21 hits in Sunday's tilts as Brooke Doumer, Nicole Christensen and Kaley Barker all homered.  Ally Distler also had two doubles while going 3-for-6 with four RBIs while throwing three would-be base-stealers out in the first game.  Doumer was 3-for-5 with two walks and scored four runs throughout the day.

Christensen, who also 3-for-5 on Sunday, hit three home runs in the series, driving in 10 runs throughout the weekend.

Meanwhile, Ellie Smith and Paige Adair picked up complete game wins in the circle on Sunday.  Adair, now 6-0, gave up just two hits while tossing her third shutout in the series finale after Smith spread eight hits to improve to 4-0 in the first game of the doubleheader.

Game 1

The Grizzlies scored the opening run in the top of the second but the Mavericks quickly rallied for five in the bottom half to seize early control.

Distler started the inning with a double and then scored on a Christensen RBI single.  After a line-drive double play, the Mavericks then mounted a 4-run, 20uout rally as Sarah Jorissen and Ashley Bradford singled before Drew Sims laid down a bunt while rounding the bases on two separate Grizzly throwing errors on a wild play that made the score 4-1.

Doumer then homered to complete the inning.

After  scoreless third inning, the Mavericks would send 11 hitters to the plate while scoring eight runs to build a 13-1 lead.  Sims had an RBI single to begin the scoring while Doumer plated her with a RBI groundout.

Distler then later hit a 2-run double with two outs before a Jorrisen hit by pitch plated yet another run.  Camryn Mullen then delivered a pinch-hit 2-run double before scoring on a wild pitch to complete CMU's scoring.

The Grizzlies did manage to score one run in the top of the fifth but needed five to continue the game.

Eight different Maverick hitters recorded hits in the game as Smith, Distler and Sims all had two.  Doumer, Distler and Mullen all had 2-RBI games as six different Mavericks drove in runs.

Game 2

The Mavericks scored quickly as Doumer drew a lead-off walk before moving to second on a Lauren Wedman sacrifice and scoring on a Distler RBI single.

However, the game remained 1-0 through 3 ½ innings as the Mavericks left two runners on in the first and the bases loaded in the second.

In the third, Adams State was the team to put on a threat as the Grizzlies put runners on second and third with no outs thanks to singles by Tyler Hays and Jade Garbiso followed by a wild pitch.  However, Adair got two straight strikeouts to help her get out of the jam.

Riding high, the Mavericks then went to work offensively in the fourth as they scored six runs to take a 6-1 lead.  Wedman, who had gone 0-for-3 to see her 20-game hitting streak snapped in the first game, delivered the first big blow, a 3-run base-clearing double.  Two plays later, Christensen hit a 2-run home run.  Barker then hit her first homer of her career, as the Mavericks went back-to-back to take a 7-1 lead.

After a 1-2-3 inning from Adair, who recorded her fourth and fifth strikeouts, the Mavericks then went to work on closing the game, doing so without a hit in the bottom of the fifth.  Doumer drew a lead-off walk and then stole second while moving to third on a wild pitch while Wedman was at the plate.

Wedman then walked and stole second before Distler hit a sacrifice fly to right as Doumer trotted home with the series sweep clinching run.

The Mavericks hit .467 as a team throughout the series recording 47 runs and 49 hits, including nine home runs and 16 for extra bases.

Now hitting a RMAC-leading .405 on the season, the Mavericks will head out on the road to face the conference's other offensive power in Regis, which currently sits third in the RMAC standings at 8-2.

The Rangers, 11-3 overall, are hitting .398 as a team have scored a league-high 136 runs.  Their weekend series at Chadron State was postponed due to weather.

Next weekend's series in Denver will feature doubleheaders on Saturday at Noon and Sunday at 11 a.m.  Fans will not be permitted to attend although all four games will be streamed on the RMAC Network.
