IRVINE, Calif.— Colorado Mesa University's move to the Pacific West Conference for men's and women's tennis this year is already paying dividends as Maverick redshirt freshman
Halle Romero has been named as the PacWest's initial Women's Tennis Player of the Week of the 2021 season. The announcement was made by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Romero, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas and a 2019 graduate of Calallen High School, is off to a 6-0 start in doubles and has won five straight No. 4 singles matches as she has started the campaign with a 5-1 mark.
In the process, Romero has helped lead the Mavericks to their first ever 6-0 team start with wins over Oklahoma Baptist, Nebraska-Kearney, Hastings, Ottawa (Ariz.), Western New Mexico and Arizona Christian over the past two weekends.
All five of her singles wins have come in straight sets and she has not dropped more than three games in any of those 10 sets.
In doubles, she has paired with three different teammates in her perfect mark so far. Four of those matches have come at No. 3 doubles while playing with
Alexi Klabunde. She also recorded a No. 2 doubles win alongside
Lauren Thomas last Saturday against Western New Mexico and received a forfeit win alongside
Julianna Campos later in the day against Arizona Christian.
CMU will put their perfect mark on the line this Saturday when they travel to Pocatello, Idaho for a doubleheader at NCAA Division I Idaho State in the Bengals' Reed Gym.
