CHADRON, Neb.— Gabrielle Vogt and
Sydney Leffler each recorded 13 kills while
Kerstin Layman eclipsed the 1,000 career dig milestone to help lead the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks to their tenth consecutive win on Friday night at Chadron State College here in the Eagles' Chicoine Center.
Vogt hit .500 as the Mavericks, now 18-4 overall and 13-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, out-hit the Eagles (4-18, 2-13 RMAC) .298 to .177 in the 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 27-25) victory, their 27th straight over the Eagles since 1995.
The Mavericks finished the 83-minute match with a massive 53-25 advantage in total kills as
Savannah Spitzer,
Sierra Hunt and
Tye Wedhorn also contributed significantly. Spitzer had nine kills on .375 hitting while Hunt finished with eight kills. Wedhorn also put down seven on .357 hitting.
Setter
Sabrina VanDeList orchestrated the multi-dimensional attack and finished with 38 assists and two kills of her own. She also recorded three aces, including one on the penultimate point of the sweep.
Layman had a team-high ten digs and now has 1,003 in her career. She became the 18
th Maverick in program history to surpass the 1,000 milestone.
The Mavericks hit .302 in the first set breaking open what was tenuous 7-6 lead into a 16-9 advantage thanks to an extended 9-3 run.
The Eagles would pull within three at 16-13 with a 4-0 run of their own and still trailed by just three at 20-17 before CMU went on a 5-1 run with kills from Hunt, Leffler, Spitzer and two by Wedhorn to close out the opening set.
The Mavericks then jumped out to a 10-4 second set lead and used another 6-0 run, triggered by two Leffler kills to take a large 18-6 lead. The Mavs, who committed just two hitting errors in that second frame, hit at a .484 clip throughout the set and never looked back to go up 2-0 overall.
The Mavs also used an 8-0 run with VanDeList at the service line early in the final set to take an 8-2 lead but watched the Eagles rally to within a point at 12-11. CMU would maintain a small cushion before the Eagles finally tied the set at 21.
The Mavericks then called timeout and watched the Eagles commit service errors on both of their next two opportunities as the Mavericks went back in front 22-21 and 23-22. VanDeList then recorded a kill to give the Mavericks a match point.
However, an Eagle block and Audrey Bennet service ace stopped both of those. The Eagles then earned a set point of their own as they went up 25-24 on a Maverick hitting error before the Eagles exchanged the favor as the set was again tied at 25.
VanDeList then recorded an ace before yet another Eagle hitting error gave the Mavericks the sweep.
The Mavericks will now head to Golden, Colorado for a Saturday evening clash with 11
th-ranked Colorado School of Mines (20-3 overall). Both teams are 13-2 in the RMAC and tied for second place in the conference standings along with No. 24 Regis, which also won on Friday night. First serve in the Orediggers' Lockridge Arena is set for 5 p.m.
