PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa men's golf team opened the NCAA South Central / West Preview Tournament on Monday (Oct. 4) at Pueblo Country Club. The tournament features 19 teams within the Super Region including several that made the field of the Super Region tournament from a year ago.
The Mavericks put together a solid first round of play on Monday and are positioned in sixth place with a 4-under, 280. They were positioned inside the top six all round long with several stops in the top spot throughout the day.
Three teams are in a tie for third place at 6-under, 278 that include Midwestern State, Texas A&M Commerce, and St. Mary's. Everyone is chasing Oklahoma Christian who sit atop the team leaderboard at 10-under followed by host CSU Pueblo at 7-under.
Yael Chahin leads the Mavericks at 2-under, 69 in the round and is in a tie for 15
th place on the overall leaderboard. Chahin bogeyed his first hole of the day then never looked back. He finished the front nine with eight straight pars and then birdied his first two holes on the back nine. He finished out with a birdie on No. 15 and then three pars.
Ethan Bishop and
Peter Grossenbacher are just behind Chahin at 1-under, 70 and in a tie for 20
th place after the first round.
Texas A&M Commerce's Zach Burch is in the overall individual lead at 5-under, 66.
The second and final round will begin tomorrow morning at 9am with a shotgun start.
