Men's Basketball Extends Win Streak

Grand Junction, Colo. – After a few schedule changes throughout the week, the No. 10 Colorado Mesa men's basketball team opened the new year with a an 60-56 win over the UCCS Mountain Lions, keeping their win steak and undefeated record alive.

The win also makes it 10 straight for the Mavs, dating back to March 3, 2020 when they beat UCCS in the RMAC Tournament quarterfinals.

Georgie Dancer made his home court debut, putting up 21-points to lead all scorers on the night and was the only Maverick in double-figures. He finished 5-for-11 from the floor, and two of his three, 3-pointers were back-to-back in the final two minutes of the first half. Defensively he notched four steals and a block.

Blaise Threatt suited up for the first time chipping in nine points on 4-for-8 shooting. Reece Johnson matched that with nine points of his own , to go along with four rebounds.

UCCS won the battle of the boards 45-31, 17 of which were offensive. However, the Mountain Lions committed six more turnovers, as the Mavs capitalized and tallied 18 points off of those turnovers.

Both teams had a quiet first half, with CMU shooting just 33.3 percent from the field, but made 14 of their 30 points at the free throw line.

As the team took the court after the break, UCCS came out firing, taking their biggest lead at five. After the teams traded blows, CMU took over on a 3-pointer from Georgie Dancer and built up a six point edge.

Just as the Mountain Lions closed the gap, Reece Johnson knocked it down from beyond the arc to regain the lead. UCCS would get within two, but Dancer drew the foul and sunk both his free throws with thirty seconds left to lift CMU to the win.

The Mavs will head up to Denver next weekend to meet up with MSU Denver and Colorado Christian on Friday and Saturday respectively. This will be the second meetings between the teams this season.
